Hazelmere Junior School

English

Statement of Intent

The 2014 National Curriculum for English aims to ensure that all children:

  • Read easily, fluently and with good understanding.
  • Develop the habit of reading often and widely for pleasure and information.
  • Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting language and style for purpose and audience.
  • Use discussion in order to learn.
  • Are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations

At Hazelmere Junior School, we plan for these skills to be taught every day in literacy specific learning. However a child’s ability to communicate is vital to all aspects of their learning therefore English skills are embedded in lessons spanning the curriculum.

Key aims

Hazelmere aims to provide children with these main sets of skills:

  • develop confident, independent readers with a life-long love of reading and literature, through widespread reading for enjoyment.
  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading.
